The Dnipropetrovs'k city was founded in 1776 by initiative of Grigoriy Alexandrovitch Potemkin, the favorite of the Russian empress Catherine II. Prince Potemkin planed this city to be the third capital of the Russian empire, and according to his plans, it would become the administrative, economic and cultural center of Novorosia. A new city got the name Ekaterinoslav in honour of empress.

In 1926, under the Soviet regime, Ekaterinoslav was renamed into Dnipropetrovs'k. A city got a new name in honour of revolutionary Grigoriy Ivanovitch Petrovsky.

Nowadays Dnipropetrovs'k is a large industrial and business center of Ukraine.

All main branches of heavy industry are concentrated in the Dnipropetrovs'k region, such as ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering, fuel and power engineering, industrial and domestic chemistry. More than 700 industrial enterprises work in region. 15.7% of all industrial products of Ukraine are manufactured in the Dnipropetrovs'k region; a region takes the second place in country by this index.
