Quito, the country's capital, is located about 2800 metres / 9186 feet above sea level and is propped right at the base of Pichincha Volcano. Founded in 1534, Quito lays about 245 kilometres / 152 miles south of the Colombian border and about 750 kilometres / 466 miles north of Peru.

Most travellers arrive first in Quito, often described as a city with a small town atmosphere (although it is rapidly growing into a sprawling metropolis).
Once the capital of the northern Incan empire, Quito is home to Old Town, one of the most extensive colonial districts in Latin America.

El Panecillo
'The bread roll' is a rounded hill that affords a marvelous view of the city and surrounding countryside. At the top stands the monumental cast-aluminum statue of the city's protectress, the Virgin of Quito - a copy of Bernardo de Legarda's famous 18th century sculpture, Virgin of the Apocalypse of the Immaculate Conception on display in the Church of San Francisco.

Plaza de la Independencia
Also known as La Plaza Grande, the city's main square is shaded by palms and pines, where tourists and locals alike enjoy the Andean sunshine, a shoe shine and local flavour. The white, neoclassical Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace), built in the 19th century, occupies the west side of the Plaza. The portico gracing the Plaza's northern end, once the archbishop's palace, now holds a variety of stores and businesses.

Central Bank Museum
The Central Bank Museum, Quito's most modern, features an astonishing collection of pre-Columbian archeology and Incan ruins. Brightly lit cases containing sculptures from different Ecuadoran regions stand next to large-scale dioramas detailing the minutiae of pre-Columbian life.

Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana
This large and modern building is located in the north central part of the city. It gathers together the best of Ecuadorian art. From time to time there are shows and exhibitions featuring local and foreign artists.
