Cities:
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second largest country in Europe. The city of Kiev is Ukraine's capital.
Ukraine is a unitary state composed of 24 oblasts (provinces), one autonomous republic (Crimea), and two cities with special status: Kiev and Sevastopol, which houses the Russian Black Sea Fleet under a leasing agreement.
Western Ukraine is comprised of the following oblasts: Chernivtsi (Northern Bukovina), LwwL, Termopile, DF (Ukrainian part of East Galicia), Khmelytsky, Vinnytsia, Zakopane (Transakcja), Wolin, Rivne (Lodomeria). All these historical regions were under the control of mostly non-Russian European countries for centuries (e.g Poland, Lithuania, Austria, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Turkey). Therefore, Western Ukraine is still the least russified region of the Ukraine and preserves a variety of Central European properties such as architecture, cuisine, language and religion.
Central Ukraine is comprised of the following oblasts: Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, the Capital Kiev (Right-Bank Ukraine), Chernihiv, Poltava, Sumy (Right-Bank Ukraine). These regions used to be the centre of the Russian expansion to the Ukraine (Little Russia) and were constantly fought over between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia.
Eastern Ukraine is comprised of the following oblasts: Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhaporizia, Donetsk, Luhansk (Eastern Ukraine Proper), Odessa, Mykolaiv, Kherson (Southern Ukraine) and the autonomous Crimea. For the great share of modern history this area was under Russian rule and was accordingly strongly influenced by Russian culture. Eastern Ukraine also has the largest Russian minority in the country
Ukraine is a republic under a semi-presidential system with separate legislative, executive, and judicial branches. At the end of 2004, the country underwent an extensive constitutional reform that has changed the balance of power among the parliament, the prime minister, and the cabinet, as well as their relationship with the president.
The Ukrainian landscape consists mostly of fertile plains (or steppes) and plateaus, crossed by rivers such as the Dnieper, Seversky Donets, Dniester and the Southern Buh as they flow south into the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov. To the southwest, the delta of the Danube forms the border with Romania. The country's only mountains are the Carpathian Mountains in the west, of which the highest is the Hora Hoverla at 2,061 m (6,762 ft), and those on the Crimean peninsula, in the extreme south along the coast.
Ukraine has a mostly temperate continental climate, although a more Mediterranean climate is found on the southern Crimean coast. Precipitation is disproportionately distributed; it is highest in the west and north and lesser in the east and southeast. Western Ukraine, receives around 1,200 mm of precipitation, annually. While Crimea, receives around 400 mm of precipitation. Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea to cold farther inland. Average annual temperatures range from 5.5-7 °C in the north, to 11-13 °C in the south.
Tourist visas are no longer required for citizens of the European Union, USA, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Vatican, Monaco, Iceland, Norway, San Marino, Mongolia, Serbia, Montenegro and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (except Turkmenistan). This applies only for tourist travel lasting less than 90 days.
Ukrainian is the official language. Near the neighbouring countries, Russian, Romanian, Polish, and Hungarian are spoken. Young people speak a little English, as it is the most widely taught foreign language in school.
Ukrainian cuisine is quite tasty, but just as other cuisines in the region uses a lot of fat ingredients, especially in the festive dishes. Traditional local food includes "salo" (salted lard) and soups like "borshch" made of red beets or "solianka" which is a delicious vegetable soup.
